How to wash silk: A complete guide to caring for silk items
Silk is a luxurious, breathable and durable material, but it needs gentle care to maintain its beautiful shine and softness. If you wash silk incorrectly, it can lose its silkiness, fade or even tear. Here’s a complete guide to washing and caring for silk items. We’ve also highlighted suitable detergents available in the Estonian market/shops that are also suitable for washing silk fabrics.

1. Hand wash or machine wash?
Silk is best washed by hand, but can also be machine washed if done with the right settings.
2. Handwashing instructions
Use lukewarm water (max 30°C).
Add a gentle silk det ergent or detergent for wool and silk. At the end of the post you will find a list of suitable products.
Avoid hard rubbing – massage the fabric gently.
Do not soak for more than 5 minutes as the silk fibres may lose their strength.
Rinse with lukewarm water until the detergent is completely removed.
3. Machine Washing Guide
Use delicate wash mode and lukewarm water (maximum 30°C).
Put silk items in the wash bag to avoid damage.
Use a gentle detergent, avoid bleach and enzyme-based detergents.
Choose a low spin speed or avoid it altogether. Maximum 600 p/m
4. Drying
Do not twist the silk as this may stretch and damage the fibres.
Place the item on a clean towel, roll up the towel and press gently to remove excess moisture.
Dry on a flat surface or drying rack in the shade, away from direct sunlight and heat.
Do not use a tumble dryer as this can shrink and damage the silk.
5. Ironing and removing wrinkles
Iron on low heat (silk mode) and inside out.
Use a steam iron or steamer to gently remove wrinkles.
When ironing, use a damp towel between the fabric and the iron to prevent shiny marks.
6. Removal of plaques
Avoid harsh stain removers and chlorine-based products.
To remove light stains, dab with a damp cloth and a small amount of silk soap.
For grease stains, sprinkle cornstarch or baby powder over the stain, leave to soak in and gently brush off.
7. Storing silk
Fold the silk properly and store it in a breathable garment bag (not plastic).
Avoid exposure to sunlight as this can bleach the fabric.

Summary
Silk is a delicate material that requires special care, but if washed and cared for properly, it can retain its beauty and durability for a long time. By using gentle washing methods, avoiding intense heat and keeping silk in the right conditions, you can enjoy its luxury for a long time.
